Emergency rule: ACN accuses Jonathan of deception

Posted on 05:56 by Unknown

Action Congress of Nigeria has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of engaging in deceit by saying the democratic structures in the states where he has declared a state of emergency would be kept intact. The party said the President had “in fact grabbed power and castrated democracy” in the states.

In a statement in Kaduna on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party quoted from the President’s speech to the nation on May 14, thus: ‘’The details of this Proclamation will be transmitted to the National Assembly in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. But in the meantime, let me make it clear that within the purview of this Proclamation, the Governors and other political officeholders in the affected states will continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities.’’

ACN said, “According to the gazette published by the Federal Government on the declaration, it is shown that the President has virtually eviscerated the democratic structure and stripped the political officeholders of their constitutional responsibilities, thereby reversing the assurance he gave in his speech on the declaration.”

ACN also warned that unless such “despotic tendency” was checked, “nothing would prevent the President, in the name of the ongoing fight against Boko Haram, from extending this power grab to other states that catch his fancy.”

It addd, “This is dangerous and must be checked, in the interest of our democracy.”

The party said it had been vindicated for not only rejecting the proclamation, but for asking the National Assembly to study the proclamation well before approving it.

The statement read in part, “Here is what we said in our statement of May 16, ‘Truly understanding the proclamation will enable them to make an informed decision when the issue is brought before them.’

“We also said the state of emergency, which is essentially martial law, ‘has castrated democracy in the affected states, even though the democratic structures have been left largely intact’. Our warnings have now turned out to be prescient, a departure from the mass hysteria that greeted the declaration, a departure from the failure of all those who should have seriously scrutinised the declaration.

“A nation that is justifiably angry over the senseless Boko Haram killings, but inexplicably overly exuberant at a time that calls for sober reflection simply failed to see the booby traps in the state of emergency declaration. Predictably ever-acquiescing Senate went ahead to approve the declaration even before reading its provisions!”

MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 3 MANCHESTER CITY 4

Posted on 05:24 by Unknown

Summary
An entertaining friendly in the US saw Chelsea surrender a three-goal lead to lose 4-3 to Manchester City.

Having taken the lead through a Demba Ba header early in the game, Cesar Azpilicueta scored his first goal for the club from the penalty spot a minute before the break.

When Oscar made it 3-0 nine minutes after half-time, the game appeared won, but two City goals in quick succession - from Javier Garcia and Edin Dzeko - ensured there was still plenty to play for.

Dzeko scored again late on to draw City level, and in the last minute Micah Richards stole in at the far post to convert a Garcia cross.

Team news
Rafael Benitez was able to name a strong side, while also handing debuts to two of our youngsters. Andreas Christensen partnered Gary Cahill in the centre of defence, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek played alongside John Mikel Obi in midfield. There were also starts for the likes of Petr Cech, who captained the side, Ashley Cole and Juan Mata. Azpilicueta was deployed in a more advanced role on the right-hand side, while Ba started in attack.

Similarly, City named an experienced side, with Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez all starting.

First half
Saint Louis had well and truly been engulfed by football fever since the Blues arrived earlier this week, and after more than 10,000 supporters came along to our open training session last night, it was no surprise the locals were in and around the area of Busch Stadium hours before kick-off.

Tickets for the match sold out within 27 minutes of going on sale, and it was Chelsea who were backed by the majority of the 48,000 inside the ground.

In what was a touching gesture, both sets of players unfurled a banner expressing support for the people of Oklahoma following Monday's tornado, with the fans showing their appreciation. Each player also wore a black armband as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

It was the Blues who had the first sight of goal, Mata blasting over the bar after being teed up by Yossi Benayoun.

Five minutes later Cech was forced into action for the first time, saving well low down to his left from Sergio Aguero.

Aguero should have opened the scoring when he was put clean through by Tevez soon after, but the Argentine was thwarted by the feet of Cech, and it was a miss City were made to pay for in the 15th minute.

Benayoun picked the ball up deep inside the City half and fed Mata out wide; the Spaniard took one touch before delivering a teasing cross into the penalty area, and as Demba Ba and Hart challenged, it was the Chelsea man who got there first to head home.

Our joy was almost shortlived, however, when Aguero struck the post with a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area which had Cech well beaten.

After a slow start the game was developing into a decent contest, with players on both sides prepared to take risks they perhaps wouldn't in a more competitive affair.

Loftus-Cheek almost made it a debut to savour when he forced Hart into a save with a fizzing long-range effort, but after going behind it was City looking the more threatening.

Just before the half-hour mark Cech pulled off a magnificent save to preserve our lead. David Silva evaded Cole with some neat footwork before sending his cross into the path of Toure. The Ivorian swivelled and shot, and with the ball destined for the bottom corner, Cech somehow clawed it away.

Ba was unfortunate not to double our advantage eight minutes before the break when he tried to catch Hart out with an ambitious lob, but in the 44th minute the City goalkeeper was powerless to prevent us extending our advantage.

Mata smartly got beyond City's young defender Karim Rekik, and after being pulled down the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Azpilicueta, having never scored a Chelsea goal, was the player entrusted with taking the kick, and he calmly fired into the bottom corner to make it 2-0, sparking jubilant scenes involving his team-mates on the bench.

Second half
Benitez made five changes at the break, with David Luiz, Paulo Ferreira, Ramires, Oscar and Fernando Torresentering the fray, and nine minutes into the second half it was 3-0.

Ramires challenged Rekik inside the City penalty area, and as the loose ball ran into the path of Oscar, the Brazilian showed great feet to round Richard Wright - a replacement for Hart at the break - and roll the ball into an empty net.

Shortly after the hour mark the Blues made two more substitutions, with Marko Marin and Jamal Blackman introduced to the action.

Unfortunately for Blackman, his first task was to pick the ball out of his net after Javier Garcia had prodded home from close-range.

Worse was to come three minutes later when City reduced the deficit further, as substitutes James Milner and Edin Dzeko combined, and the Bosnian steered his strike beyond the advancing Blackman.

With Cech departing the action, the armband was handed to Ferreira, but of more pressing concern was City's growing threat.

Blackman did well to deny Milner with his feet at the far post, and we had the young goalkeeper to thank once again when he made a smart stop from a powerful Dzeko strike.

Having made seven substitutions, it was virtually a new-look Chelsea in the second half. Oscar was now playing tucked in behind Torres with Ramires wide on the right and Marin operating down the left.

Loftus-Cheek was withdrawn with 10 minutes left to play, and the young midfielder will have been happy with his display, impressing with a composed, mature performance in the heart of midfield.

With five minutes remaining, and with the Blues seemingly heading for victory, City equalised.

Mikel's clearance was charged down, and the ball fell into the path of Tevez. The Argentine spotted the run of Dzeko to his right, slid it into his path and the substitute fired across Blackman into the bottom corner.

In truth, it was a goal that had been coming, but Benitez will have been disappointed in the manner his side allowed a three-goal lead to slip.

What had been a disappointing second half display was compounded in the 90th minute when Richards arrived in our penalty area to volley home Garcia's cross from the left.

Evert, Drysdale: Calmer Serena is clear French Open favorite

Posted on 10:06 by Unknown

ESPN analysts Cliff Drysdale and Chris Evert say that one of the reasons why world No. 1 Serena Williams is their favorite to win her second Roland Garros crown is because she is a much calmer competitor. Williams, who enters the French Open on a career-best 24-match winning streak, won her lone Roland Garros crown in 2002.

“You've got to remember that her serve is so dominant now," Drysdale said. “The court is playing a little faster at the French, so that's helping her. Number two, she's not squawking and squealing like she used to on the court. She's much calmer. I think that's made a huge difference to her as well. She's much more patient. She doesn't take things as seriously as she used to. She's in a much better place mentally. She cannot be beaten by anybody but herself.”

Evert, who won a record seven French Open titles, agreed, but both mentioned that red clay is Serena’s weakest surface and stressed she would be most vulnerable in the first week.

“If you look at her on TV, she's managing her emotions in between points so much better and she's managing her energy,” Evert said. “She's conserving her energy. She's like in her own little zone, own little world. She's going to need that for the French.”

Soldiers arrested for aiding Boko Haram

Posted on 09:48 by Unknown

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, on Wednesday said some soldiers and officers of the Nigerian Army had been arrested for conspiring with insurgents in the ongoing face-off between the military and militants.

The COAS however did not give the number of soldiers that were arrested.

Ihejirika said that the affected troops were caught while posting comments he described as “negative” and conversing with terror suspects on the Internet.

He stated, “There are some soldiers that have been found to be posting negative comments on the Internet and some conversing with insurgents.

“I want to state that any officer or soldier caught linked one way or the other will be disciplined severely, there are no two ways about it.

“So the Directorate of Military Intelligence is encouraged to continue to monitor the activities along with military police and other commanders in the field because military service is service of patriotism as I said earlier.”

Nigerian troops are currently confronting militants in the three northern states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa, where President Goodluck Jonathan last week declared a state of emergency in the efforts to rout members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The Army chief spoke at the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Army transformation and Innovation Centre on Personnel Management and Development at the Command Officers Mess, Asokoro, Abuja.

The seminar was held under the leadership of the Chief of Army Transformation and Innovation, Maj. Gen Ibrahim Sani, with the title, “Building Capacity of the Nigerian Army to meet Contemporary Challenges.”

He warned that any officers found to be involved in such unacceptable conduct would be made to face the law.

Ihejirika urged the DMI, the investigative arm of the Armed Forces, and the Military Police to put commanders and soldiers in the field of operations under watch.

The Army chief explained that a soldier who gave out information on troops’ movement to the insurgents that attacked Mali -bound soldiers at Okene, Kogi State, had been arrested and would be made to face military court-martial.

Two soldiers, a warrant Officer and Corporal were killed in the Okene attack claimed by an Islamic sect.

He said, “Again let me warn; let me also use this opportunity to warn officers and soldiers who indulge in giving out information both from the Army headquarters and other formations; certain vital information that has in one way or the other worked negatively in our operations.

“As you are aware, a soldier gave out information on the movement of our troops to Mali, movement of troops bound for Mali.

“The troops were attacked at somewhere close to Okene; the guy has been apprehended and is going to be court-martialled.”

Ihejirika also advised commanders of the various Army formations in the country to exercise caution in dismissing soldiers who had been trained in handling arms.

He said that if offences committed by the affected soldiers were so grave as to prevent the soldiers from being in the unit, a bold step should be taken to jail and to keep away the offender as a result of the security situation.

He said that the Army would not jump into dismissing people as was the case in the past because of the prevailing security situation in the country.

“The situation we are facing today is such that you cannot afford to discard any of them as was the case many years back when we had the luxury to do that.

“It is also for the reason that I have advised commanders to mellow down in dismissing soldiers who are already trained and have acquired enough knowledge of use of arms.”

The Army chief, who said that the Nigerian Army had progressed beyond the era of the nation’s intervention in the crises in Liberia and Sierra Leone, announced the establishment of a special unit whose focus is to monitor the activities of troops during operations.

He said that the Army was collaborating with the United States AFRICOM, in the quest to have a standing special operations unit which could be transformed into a special brigade.

He also said that the Army had established a standing full-fledged Army Headquarters Reserve Battalion known as 101 battalion and the new battalion would be inaugurated soon.

Ihejirika, who put the strength of the Battalion being led by a Colonel at 100, said that soldiers of the new battalion had been equipped up to 50 per cent of the basic requirement.

He explained that even though the Army might appear to be overstretched, the existence of the new reserve battalion clearly indicated the readiness and preparedness of the Army to take on more challenges.

Ihejirika emphasised the place of capacity building as a vital tool of transformation in the Army.

He said, “This question is about capacity building and it will interest you to know that since the beginning of last year, we embarked on a programme of retraining young officers starting with those who had just passed out of the Defence Academy.

“They go to our counter-terrorist school and do the whole basic counter-terrorism course and acquire the confidence required to undertake counter insurgency operation. We have all the lieutenants now; this time around we will commence with the captains.”

The British Nigerian Woolwich killer - Michael Adebolajo

Posted on 04:35 by Unknown

One of the Woolwich killers has been identified as a British Nigerian man named ‘Michael 'Muhajud' Adebolajo’, whose father has been identified as 56 year old Nigerian trained nurse named Anthony Adebolajo. This is the last thing we need now. A Daily Mail article suggests that there's now a high threat of terrorism from Nigeria. Read it below...

Sources today named one of the suspects as Michael Adebolajo (pictured above) who, along with his fellow alleged killer, is a British citizen who converted to a radical form of Islam. They are not thought to have links to terror groups based in Nigeria, such as the jihadist militant organisation Boko Haram. The Foreign Office warns of a high threat from terrorism in the West African nation and raises the prospect of a risk of retaliatory attacks following the French intervention in Mali.

The other killer may also be Nigerian though he has not been formally identified. Continue...

PREPARATIONS BEGIN

Posted on 05:34 by Unknown

The University of Saint Louis played host to our first training session ahead of the double-header against Manchester City in America this week.

Having arrived in the US late on Monday night (local time), the squad made the short journey from their hotel to the Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

Under the watchful eye of Rafael Benitez and his coaching staff, the three goalkeepers - Petr Cech, Henrique Hilarioand Jamal Blackman - were first out on to the pitch, quickly followed by Frank Lampard and Gary Cahill.

After a couple of warm-up laps of the pitch, it was on to a keep-ball session, with the players split into two groups.

Youngsters Andreas Christensen and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were part of a group which included the likes of Ashley Cole, Fernando Torres and Oscar.

With members of the university team watching on, and after a nine-a-side game based on retaining possession, the players then moved on to a slightly more competitive match, in which Branislav Ivanovic scored a brilliant goal from distance.

The session then climaxed with the goalkeepers - and Ivanovic - attempting the crossbar challenge, with Hilario the first player to hit the target.

The players will train tomorrow at the venue for Thursday's game, Busch Stadium, while two players will address the media.

PETER CECH REVIEWING THE BENEFITS

Posted on 04:55 by Unknown

Looking back on a week in which the team won the Europa League and claimed third place in the Barclays Premier League, Petr Cech values both achievements in terms of their potential impact on next season.

Their effect will be felt as early as August with no need for a two-legged Champions League qualifier that would have been the case had we ended up in fourth. Instead that month our European success means a place in the UEFA Super Cup match for the second year running, aiming for a better showing than the defeat against Atletico Madrid in Monaco.

'I am really happy that we won the Europa League because this win gave us a ticket for the Super Cup in Prague which is even better because I will play at home,' said Cech. 'After the huge disappointment of last year's Super Cup this is another important and positive thing, and the race for the third place was fantastic because it was up until the last minute.

'Now the structure of our pre-season can be held the same way as it is prepared and this is a big help,' he said on avoiding Champions League qualifiers.

'Everybody will have enough rest to start to season and be fresh, and we don't have to worry about this.'

It remains to be seen what the make-up of the squad will be come the beginning of pre-season but again the end of this season may help with that according to our goalkeeper.

'Last season everyone wanted Eden Hazard and because we won the Champions League he chose our club ahead of everybody else. This year we won back-to-back European trophies and I believe that win in Amsterdam was again very important because players choosing between teams may rather choose Chelsea because they always win something.'

Looking more personally, Cech, who turned 31 yesterday (Monday), is satisfied with his contribution to the long campaign.

'One of the next games for the national team will be the 70th official game I've played this season with the 63 for Chelsea, and I kept my level of performances constant. I am very pleased with the way I have played the whole season and apart from a little muscle injury I almost didn't miss any games. I felt fresh and ready and it is another season I played over 60 games and I know I can do it which is great.'

How do I stop being unfaithful to my wife?

Posted on 02:22 by Unknown

This is real and I hope the mature men reading your blog can help me. I am married to the most wonderful woman in the world. We dated for four years before I married her three years ago. We are blessed with two kids and hoping to have more in the future. My wife is simply the best. She's caring, honest, giving, very respectful and responsible and on top of all that she's drop dead gorgeous.

I wish I could show you her pictures to see but that would give me away. I couldn't have asked for a better woman. In fact my biggest prayer is when I return to this planet in another lifetime, I hope I marry the same woman. The only issue is that I am not faithful to her. I actually have never been faithful to any woman in my life but I feel this woman deserves that from me, I just don't know how to give her that. I've been with several women since we got together 7 years ago but lately I've been feeling she deserves more from me. I want to be faithful to her but I just don't know how to. I promised myself that 2013 was going to be different and I stayed faithful until last month. I've been with two other women since then, but God knows I want to stop. How do I break away from this behaviour? How do I stop myself from wanting and sleeping with other women? Serious advice only please.

Military operations already yielding results – Presidency

Posted on 10:31 by Unknown

President Goodluck Jonathan has thanked Nigerians for their support for the state of emergency declared last week in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States.

Senior Special Assistant to the President, Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, made this known in a statement on Sunday.

The statement read, “President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed gratitude to all Nigerians for the overwhelming support they have given to the declaration of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. The President also thanked the leadership of the National Assembly and many of its members, who have through calls and personal visitations, given solidarity and support for this extraordinary step taken by the President in order to halt the mindless killings, bombings and general insecurity that had prevailed in that part of the country.

“The President also notes with gratification the positive disposition and understanding of the governors of the federation, especially the Northern Governors Forum, Leaders and Elders in the North, traditional rulers, religious leaders, cultural and political groups nationwide, including opposition political parties, civil society organisations and the media.

Okupe said the President was appreciative of the efforts, loyalty, commitment and sacrifice of members of the armed forces and other security agencies, who had demonstrated commendable patriotism and gallantry in compliance with the order of the Commander-in Chief.

Okupe further stated, “Mr. President also appreciates the encouragement by members of the diplomatic corps and international community, and promises that as a disciplined force, members of the Armed Forces will operate according to acceptable international rules of engagement and will pay particular attention to the safety and well-being of the citizens of the affected states during this period of emergency rule.

“Mr. President also notes that the efforts of the Armed Forces have already started yielding positive results, as available information confirm that the insurgents have been dislodged from their previous safe havens and camps, while many have been apprehended, and their activities in the affected states have been brought to a total halt.”

Plateau residents in fear as soldiers pursue B’Haram

Posted on 05:47 by Unknown

The Police and Special Task Force in Plateau have put their operatives in Jos, the state capital, on high alert following reports that members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, fleeing from military onslaught in Borno State have been sighted in Bauchi and other neighbouring states.

There was high presence of riot policemen as well as increased security checkpoints in Jos and Bukuru metropolis on Sunday.

Most churches witnessed low turnout as the increased security presence and extra search created panic among residents.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Olakpe, told our correspondent that the police were not leaving anything to chance in the bid to ensure that terrorists fleeing from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, did not find a safe haven in Plateau.

“We are beefing up security and all the security agencies in Plateau are cooperating to ensure that the state is kept safe. You know that a state of emergency was declared in three states and Plateau escaped because intelligence report had indicated that the state was relatively safe,” Olakpe said.

The commissioner said he was also cooperating with officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service to secure the borders and ensure that illegal immigrants did not take advantage of the situation to enter the state.

Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang said he would continue to support President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure permanent peace in the country.

Jang stated this in an interview with journalists at the Yakubu Gowon Airport, Haipang, Jos, shortly after his arrival from an overseas trip.

Jang assured the residents that security agencies in the state were capable of keeping the state safe from any type of insurgency and urged the people to cooperate with the security agencies.

He said the President, as the chief security officer of the country, must have had all the security reports before declaring a state of emergency in the three states.

The governor said, “The President knows better because he is the Chief Security Officer of the nation. What we need to do is to support everything that he is doing so that we can bring total peace to our nation.

“The state of emergency, like we had in some local government areas in the country, is to ensure that the military personnel are given the free hand to be able to bring total peace.

“We hope what the President has done will now bring total peace to Nigeria and all the states so that the desire dividends of democracy are provided to Nigerians”

Amaechi threatens to expose Abuja-based politicians

Posted on 04:13 by Unknown

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has threatened to expose some Abuja-based politicians from the state owing to the crisis currently rocking the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

Amaechi, who said he was no more running for any political position, added that the people of the state would lose their respect for his critics by the time he opened up on their past deeds.

Amaechi, who spoke when the Archbishop of the Niger Delta Diocese, Anglican Communion, Archbishop Ignatius Kattey, paid him a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt on Wednesday lamented that nobody realised the efforts put in place by his administration to ensure that peace reigned in the state.

He said, “I will speak to the state, but not now. When I speak to the state, you will not respect any of these people (Abuja-based politicians from Rivers). I am now determined to open up.

“I am not running for any other position that they would say ‘you must manage information so that people can trust you’.

“Nobody realises how much effort we have put in place for people to walk on the streets.

“Nobody realises how much money we have put in place to make people walk on the streets. All they are interested in is how they would bring down those efforts. So, as men of God, you must stand for the truth and preach the truth.”

Earlier, Kattey prayed for God to grant Amaechi the grace, strength and wisdom to continue to perform and overcome any challenge.

The cleric lauded the governor for his achievements in the state, saying, “Your Excellency’s administration has made landmark achievements in all sectors of our economy.”

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Chamberlain Peterside, has said he was not afraid of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an alleged missing $10m.

Peterside, who spoke in a radio interview in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, was reacting to the controversy surrounding the Bombardier jet purchased by the state government.

The commissioner insisted that no money was missing in the state government account, adding that the state runs a tight and robust system.
