3d child view

Posted on 19:19 by Unknown

Thanks to a new software developed recently in Monaco, parents can now see hi-tech photos of their unborn babies. The software creates the images by adding colour, skin texture, lighting and shadows to normal ultrasound scans...and it also helps doctors detect problems earlier. The photo above right in black and white is the old style ultrasound scan. I like this new one. Long live technology!

Rev Chris Okotie seeks secret trial for ex-pianist, asks judge to chase journalists

Posted on 16:40 by Unknown

Culled from Premium Times

The Head of the Household of God Church and former presidential candidate, Chris Okotie, was so uncomfortable with journalists reporting his involvement in a suit that he asked the judge to chase journalists away from the court room.
The reverend stated this to a Lagos Magistrate Court Judge on Wednesday during a trial between him and a former member of his church.
Mr. Okotie is accusing Dafiaghor Okiotor, 40, a former keyboardist in the church, of blackmail and intimidation and trying to extort N39 million from him.
Mr. Okiotor, however, stated that the flamboyant head of the church owed him after he played the keyboard and produced music for the church for 14 years.

The accused had consistently debunked claims that he was a volunteer at the church, adding that he had a “private arrangement” with Mr. Okotie.

Okotie seeks journalists exit
As the trial continued on Wednesday, Mr. Okotie asked the magistrate to tell the reporters to “excuse’ them from the court.
“Your Honour, there are journalists in the court recording the proceedings. We would be obliged if they can be excused from the court,” said Kola Dopamu, who was holding brief for Mr. Okotie at the trial.

Robert Igbinedion, Mr. Okiotor’s counsel, demanded to know the reasons for asking the journalists to leave.

“What issue does it go to? You cannot eat your cake and have it. You were the ones who brought us to court. The court is a public place and setting where everybody, lawyers, journalists and even passersby come to unhindered as long as they don’t disrupt the proceedings,” Mr. Igbinedion said.
Oshodi Makanjuola, the magistrate, ignored the defence lawyer and told the journalists to “leave her court.”

“I know your people (journalists) are always around the court premises but why are you in this particular court proceeding?” Mrs. Makanjuola asked the journalists. “What is so special about this case that you want to cover the case? Please leave the court room.”
The magistrate also shouted at Mr. Igbinedion, who tried to oppose the order.
“Excuse me, I will not allow you to talk. I do not want journalists in my court. This is my court and I run it the way I so please. Who are you that journalists should be coming to cover your case? What nonsense!”

A shouting match
As the court orderly came forward to march the journalists out of the room, a shouting match ensued between the magistrate and the defence lawyer.
Court transcripts seen by PREMIUM TIMES detailed the heated verbal exchanges between the magistrate and the lawyer.
“Your Honour, you have no right to issue that order. The constitution is very clear about the freedom of the press and public hearing. By your action you have just trampled on the fundamental right of my client to a fair hearing,” Mr. Igbinedion said.
The magistrate fired back: “How dare you talk to me in that manner? So, it’s the journalists that would now ensure that his rights are protected?”
Mr. Igbinedion continued, “Your Honour, I’m sorry but you do not have the power to do that. You sit there operating with the powers that was given you by the constitution but you are trampling on the same constitution. Your action, if you insist, will rob I and my client of every confidence that we can get justice in this court. If you insist the journalists, who are the Fourth Estate of the realm, leave then I will have no choice but to leave also. You may as well pass your judgment without trial.”
As other lawyers in the court, visibly taken aback, tried to douse the tension in the room, a furious Mrs. Makanjuola insisted that the journalists would leave.
“How dare you talk to me like that? This is my court. Are you going to tell me how to run my court? Journalists please leave my court now,” Mrs. Makanjuola said.
At this point, the defence lawyer threatened to walk out with his client.
“Your Honour, my client is no longer assured of fair hearing. We do not have confidence in the court anymore. The court has ceased to be a public place. A place where everybody should have access especially members of the Fourth Estate of the realm,” said Mr. Igbinedion.

I can use my power anyhow
The argument and counter argument dragged on, the magistrate insisting that no law states that journalists must cover the proceedings of the court; the lawyer arguing that it was their fundamental right.
“I have the power to use my discretion to allow the journalists or not to allow the journalists. You have no right to tell me that journalists must be in my court,” the magistrate said.
Mr. Igbinedion started to flip the pages of the Nigerian Constitution, searching for the section that deals with the Freedom of the Press.
“Sorry, Your Honour, but your discretion cannot supersede the laws of the country… My client is facing a criminal charge brought against him by Mr. Chris Okotie who we all know is a billionaire. The constitution says that no part of the hearing can be conducted in secret. It must be open. If you will trample the constitution then we will lose confidence in the court.”
Mrs. Makanjuola asked the lawyer his reason for ‘bringing’ journalists to cover the court’s proceedings.
“Journalists often come to cover cases in court but why should they come for your matter? Who are you? I’m just wondering why you decided to bring a special journalist. What is so special about you and your case that journalists should come?” Mrs. Makanjuola asked.
Mr. Igbinedion responded that the matter is an oppression of the poor by the rich.

Okotie oppressed my client
“The constitution is here to protect everyone from oppression. Mr. Chris Okotie accused the defendant publicly. Now he wants the defendant to be tried secretly. My client has been maligned in the newspapers with headlines like: ‘Pianist assaults Reverend Chris Okotie;’ ‘Pianists attacks Chris Okotie while preaching;’ ‘Pianist disrupts Reverend Chris Okotie’s service;’ ‘Pianist threaten Reverend Chris Okotie.
“Google any of these headlines, you will find my client named as the anarchist. My client was in jail when these publications came out. My learned prosecutor granted an interview stating these to the press. Consequently, my client is finding it difficult to get jobs because no one is ready to give any job to a man who has been publicly portrayed to have assaulted his boss.
“When they were making all these allegations, the press was good and okay. Now we say give your evidence publicly, they now have a problem with the same press being around. We say no to that kind of oppression,” said Mr. Igbinedion.
The magistrate eventually asked the journalists to return, stating that she did not “have a personal interest in the matter.”
“So it’s the journalists that will ensure a fair hearing? Ok, call the journalists to come in since that is the way you think your client can have a fair hearing,” Mrs. Makanjuola said. “Let it not be [said] that I have any special interest in this matter,” she added.
Addressing the journalists, the magistrate urged them to be objective in their reporting of proceedings.
“I read Mass Communications before going to study Law. I hope you understand what I mean about being objective?” she said.

OGA ON TOP MOVIE FINALLY OUT

Posted on 23:23 by Unknown

Call it the director’s creativity or mischief, the movie, Oga at the top, is out. Quite similar to the viral ‘Oga at the top’ quote, the movie features popular Nollywood actor, Nkem Owoh, also known as Osuofia. Although the viral quote stopped trending on Twitter after a week of dominance, Nigerians put their creativity to test as they made T-shirts, mugs, songs and jokes about the error made by the Lagos State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Obafaiye Shem, during an interview on Channels Televison.

Efforts to reach Osuofia proved futile as his mobile phone was switched off when Saturday Beats tried to reach him. He did not also reply to a text message sent to his phone.

From Maputo To Guinea-Fowls

Posted on 22:37 by Unknown

The Rt. Hon Speaker's description of the Maputo Report as damning is an apt summary of the mismanagement of the public purse in the country in recent times.

The past few weeks have been characterised by a litany of stories about how monies from the state kitty have either gone unaccounted for or have been outrightly misused.

Try as they have to whitewash the damning revelations, the so-called communicators for government have ended up entangling themselves in the cauldron as they hop from one radio station to another with figures which do not add up.

There is just too much looting and we wonder whether those who are busy doing so ever think of being asked one day to account for their financial misdemeanour.

Parliament has virtually been overrun by the pillagers, who are bent on clearing anything in the coffers, regardless of the effects of the wanton haemorrhaging Ghana is suffering at their hands.

The Maputo story is being told afresh and the damning details emerging are enough to break the heart of a nationalist. Why allocated funds for purchases related to an international sporting engagement were diverted, remains one of the many fiscal riddles of recent times.

The identification of a mafia in the National Sports Council now Authority was not made today yet little or nothing has been done to stem the fiscal anomalies upon which many government appointees have fed fat on.

We may never know why the Information and Media Relations Minister sought to prevent Hon Isaac Asiamah from raising the issue of the misappropriation of public funds meant for the All-Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.

Suffice it to point out that, the attempt by Hon Mahama Ayariga to stop his colleague MP from laying bare the open thievery was anything but acceptable.

We are faced with myriad of opportunities with which to prove our unalloyed commitment to fighting corruption in our body-politic but in all these we have failed to prove our mettle in the direction of confronting the graft head on.

The best policy formulators have done is talk about their commitment to fighting corruption, period, as the nation's coffers continue to bleed profusely.

The tale of the missing guinea-fowl funds, as some cynics have dubbed one of the freshest of scandals in the Corruption Chapter, has made an unsettling debut on the political terrain.

These are busy times for the ruling party's communicators as they tackle the scandals as and when they rear their heads. Until it is displaced by another scandal, the tale of the guinea-fowl and the Asongtabas will remain at the top of the scandals chart.

A Tale of Two Quotes! Here we go again! :-)

Posted on 22:15 by Unknown

"We cannot continue to waste resources meant for a greater number of Nigerians to subsidise the affluent middle class, who are the main beneficiaries (of fuel subsidy). We believe that as we progress, government is going to continue to enlighten Nigerians on the need to remove fuel subsidy" ~ President Goodluck Jonathan - January 2012

"Finally, for the avoidance of doubt and at the risk of being repetitive, this administration is not considering the issue of removal of fuel subsidy in the nearest future and certainly will not embark on any such programme without extensive consultations and engagements across the various segments, interests and stakeholders in the Nigerian polity."
~ Doyin Okupe (SSA to President Jonathan on Public Affairs) - March 2013

'We made love for two hours before she died' - Akolade Arowolo

Posted on 21:58 by Unknown

Akolade Arowolo, the 31-year-old man standing trial for allegedly killing his banker wife, Titilayo, on June 24, 2011 said he and the deceased kissed and had sex for two hours on the day she died.

He said:
“That day she died was my birthday. I see birthdays as a new year in one’s life and I usually pray at the early hours of that day. I prayed till 3am but was woken by my wife’s kiss. We had sex for almost two hours and it was very good as we hadn’t done such in a while. We later prayed and talked about how we could improve on our relationship as well as business opportunities.”
Akolade said he only slapped his wife once throughout their three-year marriage, adding that their marriage was not a violent one as alleged.

Akolade, while being led in evidence by the defence counsel, Olanrewaju Ajanaku, told an Ikeja High Court on Thursday that he met his wife at Lagos State University in 2005 while he was taking classes for a postgraduate degree.

He said they grew close and became good friends and he got her pregnant in 2008 and they got married in November that year.

He said, “We were great friends and lovers but that is not to say that we didn’t have challenges. In the course of our relationship, there were times people commended us because we knew how to counsel people.

“We were everywhere together and I took her to work on many occasions while sometimes, I would leave the car for her to take to work while I would use public transport. Our challenges were like those of many young couples. We disagreed on many things.

“For example, a few months before our daughter, Olamide, was born, we were making plans for the baby when she demanded N500, 000 to buy all necessary things. I told her I didn’t have that much on me and she should accept N100, 000 but she refused and left for her parents’ home.”
Akolade described his wife as hot-tempered adding that she always flared up whenever she could not have her way, earning her the nickname, Thatcher.

He said a few months into the marriage, he noticed that his wife’s attitude had changed and he sought advice from a friend who told him to leave the house whenever there was an argument. He said one day, his wife got him very angry and he slapped her only once.

He said, “One Friday, I went for a vigil but did not come back the following morning. I went to stay with a friend because I wanted my wife to miss me. However I started missing her and I went back home that same day. On getting home, I met a man in the house whom my wife identified as her colleague. The man left immediately after.

“I went through her phone and noticed that she had called her father, George Oyakhire, an ex-boyfriend of hers and an unidentified number. Later, I asked her why she didn’t call me when I did not come home but she said she did not have airtime. I then asked her that where did she then get airtime to call the three people I noticed on her phone.

“She flared up and said I should never go through her phone again. She then started to call her ex-boyfriend in my presence. I got angry, grabbed her phone and smashed it against the wall. She took my phone and smashed it as well, so I slapped her. She immediately left the house and went to her parents’ place.”

He said his wife was also secretive and had even confessed to having an abortion without his consent adding that the abortion later led to menstrual complications.
Akolade, who claimed to be an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, said he was not jobless as reported but was an auditor and had even worked on big government contracts.
He maintained that his wife had on numerous occasions left him to be with her parents sometimes for months.

Justice Lateefa Okunnu adjourned the matter till May 22, 2013, for further hearing, standing down the case after Akolade broke down and could not continue with his testimony.

SEE WHY LADIES MUST STOP FIXING HUMAN HAIR, IT’S VERY DANGEROUS!

Posted on 21:03 by Unknown

The craze for natural human hair by flashy ladies is
no doubt on the increase. The situation is so bad
that a lady recently dumped her boyfriend in Lagos
because he couldn’t buy her a Brazilian Hair. Sad!
Below is the story of how Mrs Rachel Edjere, an
Abuja-based TV present, was chased in her dream
by the Indian Hair she fixed. Everyone should
learn from this:

My sister in-law came to pray with me last two
years. She said she was experiencing ill luck during
the week. So many nasty things happening to her.
I prayed wit her and the Spirit led me to ask her
what hair she had on, she said Indian. I was led to
tell her to remove it and not give out but pray and
burn it. She obeyed and things went back to
normal. Sometime after that, my hubby and I
watched a documentary on how ladies in India
sacrifice their hair to the gods if they have nothing
else worthy to sacrifice.
My husband likes human hair. So even though I
like my full dreadlocks kind of hairstyles, I give
him what he likes most times. I have done
Brazilian and Peruvian hair so thought to try
something different and more natural which is
Indian hair.
Last weekend I ordered for it and made it. Prayed
on it and believed it was fine. Yesterday night
(march 14, 2013) I had the strangest of dreams. I
saw that I made a hair that allowed me to pack it
thus project my face and make it look slimmer. All
of a sudden, I got into a scuffle wit 3 people who
began to chase me all over the place to kill me. I
got off from them narrowly and ran into a market.
There, a mad man began to chase me.
Last weekend I ordered for it and made it. Prayed

(march 14,2013)I had the strangest of dreams. I

began to chase me all over the place to kill me. I
got off from them narrowly and ran into a market.
There, a mad man began to chase me.
I escaped him narrowly then 2 molester-thugs
came after me. All the while, I felt I was carrying
someone else’s face.
I ran into a house with people praying. The lady in
charge there looked at me and showed me a
picture of my self with my regular synthetic dread-
like hair and said “but that is ur regular look, why
are you carrying someone else’s face. Then from no
where another lovely lady came from outside,
drew me to the corner and began to ask me about
my look. She said “you are having problems with
your hair right?” Whilst she was talking, I noticed
something in her mouth; a bowl of cowries and the
face of a Benin god. I looked closer and asked her
what it was and why she had it.
She said her man likes her because of that decor in
her mouth — cowries and the face of a god like a
shrine in one’s mouth? She also said that she is
comfortable and that it’s beautiful.
I woke up and prayed and immediately understood
what the message was but didn’t want to let go of
my cute human hair that cost so much.
I decided to ask my husband because he interprets
dreams accurately. He immediately told me to
remove the hair. At the same time, the Spirit told
me to cut it off and not remove it gracefully
because it tried to bring me shame and pain.
‘Cut it off, anoint your head, anoint and pray on the
hair to refute all ill and do not just throw it away
but BURN IT’. I obeyed.
I have decided to only carry my natural hair or
synthetic hair. This is because the Bible says; “The
hair is the woman’s crowning glory”. Carrying
another’s is like carrying the other person’s spirit.
The worst is even Indian. Nothing wrong with
Indians; They are beautiful and we love them
especially in Films but those hairs sold are
sacrifices to gods. Thus, they are cursed.
There are loads of other human-looking hair made
with synthetic in the market if you want that look
or if you insist on wearing real human hair, try
those from other Countries but pray on them and
be ready to bear any consequence.

How to Stop Being Broke

Posted on 20:17 by Unknown

Does money just slip through your fingers? Do you feel like you work like a dog, day in, day out, and yet still have nothing to show for it? If so, it's probable that you've fallen into a habit of letting money control you rather than the other way around. Getting your financial situation under control is about more than money; it's also about self-respect and finding balance in life. To stop being broke, it's important to realign your priorities and to learn to take better care of yourself. Here is how.

Start with you. Being broke all the time is about you not caring about yourself as much as you could be. If you don't value yourself, it's extremely hard to value money well. The choices that you make to spend, save, or borrow money affect your ability to live within your means or beyond them. Recognizing the following may help to start setting you back on the track to being financially stable:

Money, or the spending of money, does not equate with your personal value. Money neither defines who you are, nor does money invest you with power. Real power is personal and comes from within; using money to feel powerful is a way of seeking external validation rather than accepting your internal worth.[1]

Suze Orman says that we "spend more than when we feel less than.[2] When we don't feel good about our self worth, spending in an out-of-control way can be a self-pityingreaction to not having what richer people around you appear to have, and it becomes an excuse to avoid looking deeper inside ourselves to sort out what's really hurting us.

One major way to disrespect yourself is to buy what you cannot afford. The spiral that entails involves self-inflicted pain, inability to find enough money to pay for other things or even to repay what you've bought, and settling for a lifetime of debt over a lifetime of enough.

Another mistake commonly made by people who earn a reasonable amount of money is to cease to value the bargain. This doesn't mean visiting the dollar stores; it means learning how to ask for discounts, for repairs or returns, for savings. Not doing so because you feel that to do so is "icky" or find that it lacks a sense of generosity is a form of deluding yourself. We live in a system that runs on sales and profit, and you deserve to get those breaks as much as the next person. And for those of you with a college education, the degree doesn't mean you give up streetwise common sense!

For women, remember the big one: A man is not a financial plan. No matter howcharming, delightful, and forever he seems, you need to keep your financial head screwed on firmly and to be taking good care of your financial needs in savvy, thoughtful ways. Even if he is generous to the point of recklessness with your shopping extravaganzas, this is no excuse to give up your financial autonomy andfinancial common sense. Sticking to a budget is neither mean nor miserable, so lead by example.
A good mate can help with finances, more often by cooperating in frugality and diligent production of income than by lavish spending, and a bad one certainly can hurt them.

Dig yourself out by doing what's right not what feels good or simpler. The intensity of feeling great after a purchase is fleeting, with the item soon old. Suze Orman suggests that you ask yourself three "gatekeeper" questions before buying things: 1. Is it kind(to yourself)? Is it necessary? Is it true (for yourself)?[3] If you're not able to answer all three of these questions in the affirmative, then the purchase isn't one you should be making.
This includes not indulging the loved ones in your life when you know better and when you know that yet another hand-out will only further soften them rather than help them learn the financial realities.

Never deplete emergency savings or long-term investments for whims or people in trouble. You're the one headed for trouble if you do this. If this seems hard-hearted, consider Suze Orman's gatekeeper questions again.

3

Review your purchasingCreate surplus in your life. There are two simple ways to do this: 1. Lower your consumption; and 2. Increase your income. For most people, the first option is the most immediately realistic, although you shouldn't sell yourself short on aiming for the second option as a longer term goal. Get yourself started with the following:
Write down everything you spend. Get a little notebook, and add everything from the daily newspaper to the $300 boots. This method works straight away: just as writing down what you eat makes you eat a bit less, writing down what you spend makes you aware of your expenses, and should eventually lead you to spend a bit less. Be ready to be shocked if you're used to excusing your constantly broke state.

Start minding about small, pointless expenditure. Don't spend needlessly on those expenses which are not absolutely necessary, and which you could prevent with the right organization skills and willpower: the parking ticket you got because you lost track of time. Cigarettes. The $12 late payment charge just because you've not organized. The gym subscription you don’t use. The taxi because you were running late and you're perpetually disorganized.

Set your budget. Don't set one that is hopelessly unrealistic. Set aside a lump of monthly income for real debt reduction (not just paying off interest). Work out your monthly fixed expenses and include set-asides for annual or predictable expenses – car services, holidays. Divide what’s left by 31 to see how much you have to spend each day.

Wise up on your food expenditures. Many people with a reasonable income have no idea how much they spend on food. You may think you despise convenience foods, but a long, hard look at your shopping cart may tell another story. The trick is to buy loose, buy big and buy late in the day. Keep the fridge well stocked with ingredients for things that you know you can cook from scratch when you come home late and don't have much time to whip up a grand meal. Build up a repertoire of cheap recipes that everyone loves.

4

Use your frustrations to change your attitude on consumer goods.Use your frustrations to change your attitude on consumer goods. One very good way to relieve your sense of deprivation is to stop reading fashion, home style, and consumer technology magazines and flashy TV shows that subtly make you feel bad about not having the latest designer item, gadget, or home improvement (it's not even possible to keep up)--and their ads that boldlymake you feel worse. Can that top-of-the-line camera, step machine, or latest mobile phone really make you feel happier when you know that the purchase is just driving you deeper into debt? No one notices whether you use expensiveshampoo or not, so long as your hair is clean. On the other hand, you don't have to flaunt your thriftiness too much. Keep a healthy balance of knowing what you want versus what you need.
Rather than yearn for stuff you don’t have, look at what you already have. If you don’t like it, take it to charitable organizations or put it on eBay if it might sell.

Recognize brand obsession. Being loyal to a brand that provides a quality item that endures makes sense. Being loyal to a brand and buying every new thing they develop does not make sense. A very small percentage of people notice the brand of clothing you're wearing. Are you sure you even really want to try to impress them? Being emotional about labels will burn a hole in your pocket. Focus on getting value and quality for your money, and prefer quality over quantity. Remember that many brands are not the quality that their advertising might suggest: a company needs a few ads to invite the world to start buying sustainable quantities of its products, but don't be lulled into buying something where the advertising is the product.

Just one's enough...Forget about juggling credit cards. It’s not big and it’s not clever to give yourself a false sense of financial prudence, when in fact you're sliding deeper into debt. Instead, play the sniper: pick your cards off, one by one, and save yourself the unnecessary expenses from having too many credit cards. The target is to have only one bank account and one credit card for emergencies. Indeed, if you can whittle down your credit card to a $500 emergency fund card and rely on cash transactions (including debit cards) for everything else, you'll be laughing.
Avoid incurring debit card fees, and look for a credit union or bank whose fees will not be too numerous or large if you do err.

Credit cards can offer a few marginal benefits over debit cards. But if they tempt you to spend more, like most people, it's normally better to just avoid using them.

Steer clear of temptation and danger zones. These include motorway services, 24/7 convenience stores, sales, and even the food area of cinema foyers. Do not even attempt to flip through mail order catalogs and risk spending just a small amount on an item. Instead, send the catalog straight into the recycling bag, unopened. If you must walk past designer chains, walk fast, and do not take so as much as a second glance.
Don’t become enamored of “money-saving” gimmicks that take up more time and trouble than they’re worth. These include home sewing and bargain hunters’ newsletters. And be cautious of sale items: a bargain saves even more money if you don’t buy it at all.

Be prepared. Take snacks and bottles of tap water everywhere for the children. Have change ready for parking meters, spare tights in your bag. Never again buy something because you left your other one at home.

Aim to have a few no-spend days a month. After a while, it becomes a game: how can I run my life today without writing anything down in my little blue book? How ingenious can I be to make do with the things, food, and resources I already have at my disposal? See how often you can turn this into a habit.

Be generous where you can afford to be. You cannot afford to be Lady Bountiful (for the time being), but you can gift others with time, with support, with friendship, with a spare bed for children’s friends, with a lift for an elderly neighbor, and with tomatoes from your garden. Thrift can easily morph unpleasantly into meanness, but check and see how generous you are: if your own finances are a concern, set a realistic limit on giving such as 10 percent.

But before you feel he's a complete jerk, you need to know that he does wish to deal with you, but he has some reservations. All you need to do, is help eliminate those reservations and doubts about you, and he'll be totally open to paying money on you. Here's the method to get a gentleman to invest income on you:

Indicate You are able to Take Care Of Yourself

He does not desire to father you or treat you like a baby. He wants to treat you like a grown woman who can get care of herself. Only when he sees this can be true, will he feel that he can lavish you by spending money on you.

Keep in mind that men are afraid of being locked into a problematic situation. Posted on 19:32 by Unknown

The Federal Road Safety Commission has said it will deploy 33,000 personnel, comprising 18,000 regular and 15,000 special marshals, for special patrol during the Easter celebrations.

A statement by the FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Mr. Jonas Agwu, on Wednesday, in Abuja, cited the Corps Marshal,Mr. Osita Chidoka, as announcing this in Makurdi, when he visited Governor Gabriel Suswam.

“This is to ensure the presence of FRSC operatives along all corridors of the nation’s highways for effective traffic management and prompt response to road crashes.

Easter rush: Passengers stranded at Lagos airport

Posted on 19:28 by Unknown

Hundreds of intending domestic air passengers heading for different various destinations to celebrate the Easter were on Thursday stranded at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos and other airports across the country following massive flight delays by airlines.

Passengers travelling to Enugu from Lagos as well as other South-East and South-South cities had their flights delayed by three to five hours, airport officials said.

Investigations by our correspondent revealed that the delay was caused by a major technical hitch to the passenger checking system of a major domestic operator at the General Aviation Terminal of the Lagos airport during the early hours of the day.

The development, it was gathered, affected several of the airline’s scheduled flights throughout the day as the remaining flights were delayed by three hours on the average as a result.

A top official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria at the GAT said, “The airline’s server was bad in the morning. This affected the passenger checking-in system. The server did not pick up until three hours later. In fact, the airline officials were already issuing boarding passes through the manual method before the server picked up three hours later.

“The delay in the morning affected every other flight throughout the day. Lagos to Enugu, Enugu to Abuja and other flights were affected by the delay.”

Further findings revealed that other intending passengers who came to buy tickets for the day were forced to postpone their flights till the next day.

The PUNCH had reported exclusively reported that the Easter holidays would be marred by scarcity of flights as a result of the suspension of flight operations by Aerocontractors Airlines because of an industrial action by its workers.

The flight scarcity on Thursday led to a situation whereby passengers were struggling to get seats aboard the few available flights.

Airport touts, in connivance with airline officials, were having a field day as a result of the development, raising fares astronomically for desperate travellers, who were only interested in getting to their destinations.

It was gathered that the ticket for a one-hour flight was sold for N40,000 at the GAT instead of the average price of between N28,000 and N30,000.

The situation was the same at some other airports where a one-hour flight to places like Abuja and Port Harcourt was selling for over N40,000.

A visit to the GAT of the Lagos airport showed that one of the leading airlines actually capitalised on the increasing demand to hike its fares.

The suspension of operations by Aerocontractors, the second largest domestic airline by passenger traffic, due to internal labour crises, had left the airline grounded for almost two weeks.

The airline’s management is battling its almost 1,300 employees who are protesting against alleged poor condition of service among other issues.

The development has had an adverse effect on domestic air travel, which is dominated by Arik Air and Aero in terms of large route network.

Passengers have been facing hard times getting seats on the South-South and South-East routes operated by only Aero and Arik. Destinations on these routes are Benin, Calabar, Uyo, Owerri and Enugu.

Other domestic carriers such as Dana Air, IRS Airlines, Medview Airlines and Chanchagi Airlines operate from Lagos to Abuja and a few cities in the North.
