The Job Fairwhich took place at the Alliance Francais, Accra, brought together many French organizations and companies working in the country, such as SG-SSB, Technip, AirLiquide, and Golden Exotic Limited, a subsidiary of CampaignieFruitiere located worldwide.
There were also students from the University of Ghana, Cape Coast University and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology present at the event.
In an interview with ModernGhana, French Programs Coordinator at the Embassy, Anne-Marie Coquelin said the embassy embarked on the Job Fair as part of the Francophone Festival Celebration in Ghana.
She explained that the embassy seeks to increase the rate of employment in the country by creating avenues where university students and graduates would have the opportunity to interact directly with human resource managers (HRMs) of French companies, submit their curriculum vitae (CVs) to the companies for employmentopenings.
“Francophone countries, seek economic progress in Ghana; this is why the French Embassy has made this arrangement for university students and graduates to come and build direct contacts with human resource managers of the various French Companies here, so that they could be offered jobs now, or after completing their studies,” Anne-Marie pointed out.
She noted that the maiden edition of the Job Fair was held last year, which has currently provided jobs for more of the Ghanaian graduates who participated, with Golden Exotic Limited being the largest employer.Last week's, she said was the second edition.
Anne-Marie said graduate unemployment is a global phenomenon, and called on the graduates and youth to “be proactive and contact the various companies; they shouldn't always sit idly and complain because unemployment is not a problem not only in Ghana, but everywhere”.
Speaking with the Armada at the exhibition ground, the Financial Controller of Golden Exotic Limited, Mr. DeporteValentin disclosed that the company, which deals in the production and distribution of fruit crops of all kinds had employed over 2,500 people in Ghana and 11,000 worldwide, and still counting.
He disclosed that Golden Exotic is a subsidiary of Compagnie Fruitiere Group in France, and has been in existence since 2003 as a Free Zone Company.
He said that the company is a multi-national one which has many branches across the African and Caribbean pacific but produces and exports only bananas and pineapples in Ghana to the European market.
As at 11:30 am on the day, Mr. Valentin disclosed to the paper that he had received over 30 CVs from the graduate participants, which according to him would be kept in the company's data base and employment would be made as soon as necessary.
He revealed that at present, the company has vacancies in the areas of production and logistics, and therefore would employ some of the graduates who are interested in working in those fields without having to consider their experience, because it is not a must for Golden Exotic, as they seek for fresh graduates to train.
The Golden Exotic Financial Controller called on the youth to discard the idea that farming is work for the poor, and stated that: “farming now involves the use of modern practices. If all the regions in Ghana should have a plantation which can at least employ 500 people, there would not be unemployment in Ghana”.
He therefore urged them to make farming a business endeavour.
